Pharmacognostic Studies on Leaves of Abies webbiana Grown in Sikkim Himalayan Region of India

Abies webbiana Lindl. (Pinaceae), commonly called Talispatra in Bengali and Hindi, Talispatram in Sanskrit and Indian Silver Fir in English, is a large evergreen tree found in the Himalayan region from Kashmir to Assam in India. In India, this plant has been traditionally used as a drug for several ailments. The leaves of this plants have different indications in Ayurveda, the most ancient traditional system of Indian medicine. Commercially the leaves of other plants of same genus are also reported to be sold under the common trade name Talispatra. Hence, the present work was undertaken to establish the requisite pharmacognostic standards for evaluating the plant material. Although some pharmacognostic characters were already reported elsewhere, present work re-investigates some of them and reports different other necessary pharmacognostic parameters of leaves of A. webbiana grown in Sikkim Himalayan region of India to achieve greater quality control over the commercial plant material.
